Rainy River

District OPP

With the recent warm weather, the Ontario Provincial Police reminds the public to be very cautious about changing ice conditions. On Jan. 6, officers responded to a call regarding a motorist near Rainy Lake’ Haymarsh Bay, located northwest of the Noden Causeway. A driver of a pick up truck was driving on an ice road when he attempted to drive through three to four feet of water at the edge of an ice heave. The vehicle stalled and the occupants and vehicle were left stranded on the ice. There were no injuries and all occupants were able to exit the vehicle safely.

“Ice conditions are changing rapidly throughout the district," says Constable Anne McCoy. “The slush and water are evidence that the ice is weakening.” In recent days there have been rain and snow accumulations that will affect ice surfaces and ice strength.

The public is urged to use caution and officers suggest parents ensure their children are aware of the ice dangers.
