The Littlefork City Council Thursday agreed to hire Grivette Environmental Management of Eveleth to do an asbestos abatement on a condemned property within the city.

The cost to bring in the company is expected to be about $1,800, according to Mike Fairchild, Littlefork city clerk.

The property located at the intersection of McPherson Street and Second Avenue, was originally going to be razed in May, however, Fairchild reports that it was discovered the siding on the building contained asbestos.

In May, Fairchild reported the property owner would pay $900, and that would cover the costs of the demolition. Now, Fairchild said the project is expected to cost around $2,900, but said the city has a budget for demolition projects.

In other business Wednesday, the city agreed to donate $1,000 to the Northern Minnesota District Fair scheduled for July 13-15.

Fairchild said the money was given to the city by the Koochiching Development Authority and the city distributes the funds to different projects and events.

The council decided Thursday to forgo re-carpeting city hall until next year. Fairchild said one bid from Ballan Furniture in the Falls came in over what had been budgeted for the project.

The Littlefork Ambulance Service 2013 tax levy and operating income was set at $142,842 and the Littlefork Fire Department’s tax levy was set at $75,875.
