Discussion of a one day bond resolution that will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot for voters within the Littlefork-Big Falls school district topped the school board meeting Wednesday.
Board members assured the district voters that by voting yes on the ballot, property taxes will not be increased. Further discussion noted that the bonds are repaid from excess dollars in the district’s debt service fund.
“The money from the bond sale will be used to fund local projects in classroom upgrades and technology improvements,” said Superintendent Fred Seybert.
The Littlefork-Big Falls school is one of 14 that will not receive money from the state this year. Previously, the board had unanimously voted to place the bond sale question on the ballot in an effort to make up for the lack of state aid. Seybert, who is also in favor of the bond, said there has been a lot of community support, as well.
He also explained that if the one-day bond does pass, committees will meet to determine what areas need the funding. Approximately $268,000 will be gained if the voters pass the bond.
The board agreed to hire seven individuals for various roles within the school system. Beth Bachmeier, high school phy ed/health; Sara Kennedy, high school English; Marc Windsnes, high school social studies; Lisa Reller, bus driver; Trina Little, prom advisor; Heidi Bork, winter concessions manager; and John Larson, head girls basketball coach. Each person was given a one-year contract.
Student Service Coordinator Angie Williams was present at the meeting to discuss to positive feedback on the anti-bullying program “Rachel’s Challenge.” The results of the program were positive within the community and with the board, Seybert reported.
Seybert informed the board that Windsnes took seven students to the University of Minnesota to see Pres. Barack Obama Oct. 23.
