The Ranier City Council on Monday heard from a task force that is asking the city to adopt a resolution that would establish a special taxing district to fund emergency medical services.

Terry Ehrman, chair of the task force, said the new ambulance service would be operated in conjunction with Emergency Medical Services at Falls Memorial Hospital, according to Kim Nuthak, Ranier city clerk. Ehrman said it would offer advanced life support to the Falls Ambulance Service by upgrading the service with paramedics rather than emergency medical technicians, said Nuthak.

Ehrman was present with Mary Servis, chief nursing officer at FMH.

Nuthak said the project would cost $300,000 each year for the service. She said the council listened to the presentation but did not make a decision at the meeting.

The Council approved a motion to request Koochiching County Environmental Services remove a recycling drop-off bin that was placed on Ranier property belonging to Mike Lessard. Apparently, Lessard had allowed the county to put the bin on his property but the city had received letters from other residents asking that it be removed.

Koochiching County has a non-mandatory recycling policy with 13 drop-off sites to serve nearly 15,000 residents.

The Council hired a new part-time cleaning person, Judy Rosten, who will replace a worker who is leaving.

The Council also approved advanced Quickbooks budgeting and accounting training for Nuthak in Bemidji. She said the training will help record daily and monthly data more efficiently, allowing automatic reporting each quarter rather than creating reports manually from raw information.

The Council approved a building permit request from John Bruggeman, to replace a roof on a porch in front of his house.
