Jackson Vollom

The Broncos’ Jackson Vollom reacts to being tagged out by Virginia’s Ben Monson after sliding head first into second base during Thursday’s baseball game at Scheela Field.

Gunnar Anderson pitched seven scoreless innings Thursday when International Falls’ baseball team defeated Virginia, 7-0, at Scheela Field.

“I think that was my first (shutout) for my varsity career, so it’s a good feeling, especially against a Section opponent like Virginia,” Anderson said.

Anderson allowed only 3 hits and a walk while striking out six.

Thursday’s victory marked the second time this year the Broncos have defeated the Blue Devils. The Falls previously won at Virginia, 15-1.

“It was a lot more intense (Thursday) than it was the time before,” Anderson said. “Virginia obviously looked better.”

Falls took an early 2-0 lead, before a hit by Josh Potter in the bottom of the fifth drove in two more runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos’ Caleb Dahlin singled with two outs and no one on base. Virginia then decided to bring in Patrick Jarvi to pitch to Anderson.

Anderson got on base after Blue Devils third baseman Seth Holmes was unable to handle a ground ball. Falls then scored 3 runs for the inning following consecutive hits by Christian Kittelson and Ben Humbert.

“It was nice to see us swing the bats pretty well,” Anderson said.
