Caleb Dahlin

The Broncos’ Caleb Dahlin tags out Eveleth-Gilbert’s Corey Clapsaddle (18) sliding into second base during Tuesday’s baseball game at Scheela Field.

A two-out single by Ben Humbert in the bottom of the fifth drove in two runs to untie Tuesday’s baseball game and give International Falls a 5-3 home victory over Eveleth-Gilbert.

“A very timely single, one we needed,” said Broncos head coach Vic Heinlen.

Humbert’s single driving in Christian Kittelson and Gunnar Anderson accounted for one of his 2 hits and two of his 3 RBI for the game.

Anderson added 3 hits while Josh Potter had Falls’ only other hit.

Brian Sandstrom accounted for two of Eveleth-Gilbert’s 5 hits.

Humbert also recorded the pitching victory as he took the mound for the final three innings, allowing no runs on a hit with one hit batter while striking out six.

The Broncos, who have three games coming up later this week, had two pitchers precede Humbert on the mound. Caleb Dahlin pitched two shutout innings, allowing 3 hits while striking out five. Potter worked two innings and gave up all 3 runs, one earned, on a hit with 4 walks while striking out two.

“(Using more than one pitcher) was basically the game plan,” Heinlen said. “We had gone in knowing we’ve got one (game) on Thursday and two on Saturday, so we had gone in trying to conserve arms and kind of give everybody a shot to throw.”

Eveleth-Gilbert had Levi Paskett pitch the entire game. He allowed 5 runs, four earned, on 6 hits with 2 walks while striking out eight.

The Broncos, who improved to 3-1, play a road game Thursday against Greenway before Saturday’s doubleheader at Hermantown.
