The season records weren’t thrown out Tuesday when International Falls’ baseball team hosted nearby rival Littlefork-Big Falls at Scheela Field.
Broncos pitcher Wyatt Ulrich recorded his fourth victory of the season as he gave up an unearned run and scattered 2 hits in an 11-1 victory over the Vikings in five innings.
The game marked the ninth-consecutive victory for the Falls, which improved to 13-5, while L-BF closed out the regular season and opens the Section 7A Tournament on Saturday with only one victory in 2012. L-BF’s opening tournament game opponent and location have yet to be determined.
“If you look at the season that we’re having (and) the season that they’re having, you’d expect a game about that way,” said Broncos head coach Vic Heinlen.
Falls ended the game via the 10-run rule by scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mitch Nelson pitched all 4 1/3 innings for the Vikings as he gave up the 11 runs on 12 hits with 4 walks and a hit batter while striking out two.
L-BF ended up committing 4 errors, compared to two for the Falls.
“Errors are what killed us in the end,” said Vikings head coach John Larson.
Ben Humbert led the Broncos at the plate with 3 doubles, while Christian Kittleson, Jack Mellstrom and Gunnar Anderson each added 2 hits apiece.
Nelson tallied a hit for L-BF, while Taylor DeLack, who returned to the lineup after sustaining a head injury last week and wore a helmet with a face mask at the plate, recorded the Vikings’ only other hit.
Falls closes out the regular season this week with games Thursday at Hibbing, the last team to have defeated the Broncos, and Friday at home against Ely for Parents Night.
The Section 7AA Tournament is slated to begin May 30 for the Falls.
