Littlefork-Big Falls hosted two different teams Monday when the Vikings lost both games of a doubleheader.
In game one, North Woods defeated L-BF, 7-3.
“We didn’t hit the ball when we needed to,” said Vikings head coach John Larson. “Defensively, we played OK.”
Jeff Fry started for L-BF and recorded the pitching loss working the first half of the opening game. Evan Wimmer came in to pitch in relief and also stayed on the mound to start the second game.
Cherry 7, L-BF 2
The Vikings took an early 2-run lead, but didn’t score any more when they lost the second game to Cherry, 7-2.
Wimmer took the loss pitching the first four innings before being relieved by Rylan Henrickson.
While L-BF scored both of its runs in the first inning, the Vikings also lost a key player for the game in the opening frame when sophomore shortstop Taylor DeLack, who reached base on a bunt, sustained a head injury on the throw to third base where he slid in safely.
“It’s hurts losing him,” said Larson, through the head coach attributed the loss to the Tigers to the entire team effort and not a single player.
E-G 12, L-BF 0, 5 innings
The Vikings didn’t find the competition any easier on the road Tuesday when they lost to Eveleth-Gilbert, 12-0, in five innings.
Tommy Manninen had the only hit for L-BF.
Fry recorded the pitching loss working the first 1 1/3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 4 hits. Wimmer closed out the game as he gave up 6 runs on 5 hits
Larson noted the Vikings have been filling the lineup with a number of underclassmen, while a senior who sat out this week’s games, Garrett Larson, will be returning next week when L-BF plays its final two regular season games before opening the Section 7A Tournament on May 26.
