Broncos third at True Team Meet

The International Falls girls swimming and diving team recorded three top individual finishes and placed runner-up in a relay Saturday when the Broncos came in third out of nine teams at the Section 7A True Team Meet in Hibbing.

Each team was allowed up to four entries in all 12 events with points being awarded through 36 places. Scoring ranged from 36 points for first to a point for 36th in the individual events, while relays counted double.

Grand Rapids finished first in the team standings with 1578.5 points, followed by Hibbing (1498.5), the Falls (1191.5), Two Harbors/Silver Bay (1114) and Mesabi East (1037.5) rounding out the top five.

Rapids won the meet without one of its top swimmers, senior Solveig Viren, the defending Class A state champion in the 100-yard freestyle and runner-up in the 50 freestyle.

Broncos senior Breanna Shofner was a double individual winner at the True Team Meet by placing first in both the 50 freestyle (26.32 seconds) and 100 freestyle (58.71).

Falls sophomore Abby Kostiuk won the 100 backstroke (1:06.3), 62 hundredths of a second ahead of the runner-up, Rapids junior Katie Welshinger.

Kostiuk, Shofner, senior Blair Johnson and freshman Emily Saari placed runner-up in the 200 medley relay (2:02.77), 58 hundredths of a second behind Rapids’ winning time.

Saari added a top-three individual finish by placing third in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.47), while freshman teammate Claire Herzig came in sixth in 1:19.15. Mesabi East junior Hailee Jofs won the event in 1:13.75.

Herzig, Kostiuk, Johnson and Shofner came in fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.92). Hibbing placed first in 1:47.31.

In the 100 butterfly, Kostiuk and freshman teammate Emma Misner placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in times of 1:09.86 and 1:10. Hibbing senior Sammy Bird won in 1:04.71.

Misner, Johnson, senior Courtney Klow and junior Tayler Hebner finished fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:12.59). Rapids placed first in 3:58.3.

Klow added a sixth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:13.17).

The Falls had two top-10 finishes in the diving competition with junior Jessie Hell placing sixth with 259.1 points and junior Kylie Skallman tying for 10th at 228.95. Rapids junior Justus Morgan won with the top score of 373.45.

The Broncos’ other top-10 finish came from Klow, Herzig, Misner and Hebner placing eighth in the 200 medley relay (2:10.37).
