Abby Kostiuk in the 100 backstroke

International Falls’ Abby Kostiuk now holds the Bronco girls record in the 100-yard backstroke after placing first at Tuesday’s Pumpkin Quad in 1 minute, 5.18 seconds. She broke the previous school record of 1:05.58 set by Lucy Nevanen in 2006.

One school record fell Tuesday when the International Falls girls swimming and diving team won the Pumpkin Quad hosted by Mesabi East.

The Broncos had the top score of 379 points, followed by Mesabi East (304), Chisholm (273) and Northeast Range (207).

Two of Falls’ swimmers were double individual winners.

Sophomore Abby Kostiuk set a new Bronco girls record in the 100-yard backstroke by placing first in 1 minute, 5.18 seconds, breaking the previous school record of 1:05.58 set by Lucy Nevanen in 2006.

Kostiuk also won the 100 freestyle (1:01.28).

Falls senior Breanna Shofner placed first in both the 50 freestyle (26.84) and 100 butterfly (1:07.24).

The Broncos got another top individual finish from freshman Claire Herzig in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.76).

The Falls also won a relay race with Kostiuk, Shofner and freshmen Emma Misner and Emily Saari placing first in the 200 medley relay (2:03.72).

Misner added a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly (1:11.61), while senior Blair Johnson placed second in the 50 freestyle (26.84) and junior Jessie Hell came in second in the diving competition (155.4 points).

The Broncos’ third-place individual finishes came from sophomore Abby Auran in the 500 freestyle (6:36.24) and Carolann Stone in the 100 backstroke (1:16.64).

The Falls won't have another varsity meet until Nov. 7 when the Section 7A preliminaries will be held at the Lincoln Park pool in Duluth.
