The Bronco boys and girls golfers ended up with a pair of individual third-place finishes when they played in the Mesabi East Invite on Monday at The Legend golf course at Giants Ridge.
Alyssa Bergstrom led the Bronco girls with her best round of the season by posting an 89, which put her in third place overall. Kelly Blair added a 91, Malinda Porter shot a 93, Katie West and Jenna Anderson carded 100, and Margaret Harler had 111. Falls’ team score of 375 was good for second place behind Duluth East at 367.
Brett Musich and Brady Walls led the Bronco boys team with rounds of 75 and 77, respectively. Eric Cann had 91, and Adam Matthews posted 115. Musich’s 75 was good for third place overall, one shot behind the co-medalists with 74.
Duluth East also won the boys event posting a 316 team total. Virginia and Dryden tied for second with 320s.
The Broncos have one more meet to end the regular season at Virginia on Thursday for the girls and Friday for the boys.
The Section 7AA meet will begin May 22 for the girls and May 24 for the boys. The top four teams from day one at the Sections move on for day two.
Based on the two-round total, the team with the lowest score advances to the state tournament. The top five individuals not on the qualifying team also advance to state.
“Our girls have been playing pretty consistent most of the year, hanging around 365-375 for a team score,” said Falls head coach Bill Mason. “If they can keep this up, we’ll have a real good chance to win our Section and go on to state.
“Most of the girls have shown they can put some good scores together, and we need to do it on the same day, which will give us a good chance at winning the Section.”
Mason said the boys will be competing for the top-four slots to move on to the second day of Sections.
“We have the ability to be competitive with the other top teams in the Section, as with every other team you have to get four good scores on the same day,” Mason said. “If we can do this, the boys will be close with the top contenders Hermantown, Virginia, Eveleth-Gilbert, Hibbing and Cloquet.”
Mason said “our accomplished and veteran players for both boys and girls have to come through and play and score to their potentials.”
“That’s what you have to do at playoff time to move on,” he said.
