In a junior high girls swimming and diving meet displaced from International Falls for the second straight year because of the situation with the FHS swimming pool, the Broncos headed to Grand Rapids and placed fifth at Saturday’s Shiverland Invitational.

Of the eight teams in the meet, Grand Rapids won with 1,025 points, followed by Bemidji (627), Mesabi East (539), Eveleth-Gilbert (534) and the Falls (447) rounding out the top five.

The meet was separated by grade in the individual events, while the grades were combined in the relay events.

The Broncos won two of the three relays.

Falls’ 200-yard medley relay team of Abby Kostiuk, Emily Saari, Emma Misner and Claire Herzig placed first in 2 minutes, 13.63 seconds.

Kostiuk, Misner, Herzig and Josie Bates were part of the Broncos’ 200 freestyle relay team winning in 2:01.91.

In the individual events, Saari and Herzig went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke for eighth-graders in 1:21.19 and 1:23.02, respectively. Saari also placed third in the 100 individual medley (1:19.83).

Falls went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke for eighth-graders with Carolann Stone and Laura Lucy finishing in 1:19.77 and 1:24.89, respectively. Stone added a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle (2:25.29).

Kostiuk won the 100 backstroke for ninth-graders in 1:11.37.

Misner added a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle for eighth-graders in 1:05.16.

Falls ninth-grader Megan Herrly placed runner-up in the 100 butterfly (1:29.02).

Other top-three finishes for the Broncos included ninth-grader Abby Auran placing third in both the 200 individual medley (3:00.64) and 500 freestyle (7:10.63). Eighth-grader Josie Bates finished third in the 50 butterfly (37.89).
