Everyone who competed counted toward the team standings Saturday when International Falls’ girls swimming and diving team placed third in the Iron Range Conference/True Team Sectionals held at Grand Rapids.
Of the seven teams in the meet, Grand Rapids won with 1,401 points, followed by Hibbing (1,365), the Falls (1,039.5), Virginia (892), Mesabi East (755), Eveleth-Gilbert (666.5) and Chisholm (626).
Given that the Broncos haven’t had their own full-length swimming pool available to practice or compete in this season, Falls head coach Jill Herzig said finishing third at the True Team meet “is a wonderful accomplishment.”
Herzig said each team was able to have up to four entries in each of the 12 events with all finishers scoring and the relays counting double.
Two Bronco relay teams placed in the top eight in the 200-yard medley relay.
Falls’ team of Courtney Klow, Emily Saari, Sarah Todd and Breanna Shofner finished third in 2 minutes, 5.94 seconds, while the combo of Abby Kostiuk, Claire Herzig, Emma Misner and Blair Johnson came in seventh in 2:11.83.
The Broncos’ 200 freestyle relay team of Klow, Todd, Claire Herzig and Shofner clocked the fourth-fastest time in 1:54.5.
Shofner finished in the top five in two events with the third-fastest time in the 50 freestyle (26.96) and coming in fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:00.82).
Falls had two top-five finishers in the 100 backstroke with Kostiuk and Klow placing third and fifth, respectively, in times of 1:09.3 and 1:12.19.
Claire Herzig and Saari clocked top-five times in the 100 breaststroke finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, in 1:21.36 and 1:22.04.
Todd finished fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:36.42) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:12.69).
Falls’ best showing in the diving competition was an eighth-place finish by Clara Wenger with 230 points.
