Christianson finishes 13th to lead girls; Sobczynski’s seventh place leads boys
With the Section 7A championships fast approaching on Oct. 29, International Falls is beginning to gear up for the postseason.
Especially the girls.
Stunned last year after missing the state meet by one point, the Broncos have used that result as motivation this season.
Tuesday they took another step forward by finishing third at the 42nd annual Hial Pike Invitational at the Falls Country Club.
Grand Rapids won the invite with 29 points, followed by Lake of the Woods (65), International Falls (102), Ely (114), Eveleth-Gilbert (133), Virginia (156), Dryden (167) and Mesabi East (184).
“They ran as a pack and I haven’t seen that all year,” Broncos head coach Paul Hjelle said. “The spread looked good. I was pleased from what I saw.”
The Broncos were also pleased with how they ran. In 40-degree temperatures, the top four runners posted season-low times.
Stephanie Christianson finished 13th overall and crossed first for the Broncos in 16 minutes, 22.81 seconds. Amber Harms (17:00.89) and Amy Auran (17:02.44) followed closely in 19th and 20th, while Rachel Foss finished 24th in 17:25.91. Rounding out the scoring was Sierra Ruelle, who finished 28th in 17:56.08.
“I like the weather like this. I’d rather have it cold than warm,” Christianson said.
Lake of the Woods’ Victoria Alexander scorched the course and won the girls meet in 15:16.03. Mesabi East’s Megan West finished a distant second in 15:51.5.
The Broncos return to action Tuesday in the Iron Range Conference meet at Mesabi East.
Sobczynski edges Griffith as Broncos finish fifth
John Sobczynski epitomized the 2009 Bronco boys cross country team Tuesday with his initial comments following his seventh-place finish in the 42nd annual Hial Pike Invitational at the Falls Country Club.
“Finally beat Marco, I guess,” Sobczynski said. “Made my day.”
Each member of the Broncos boys cross country team has been competing all season long for the top seven spots, and it was no different Tuesday.
Sobczynski crossed in 17:43.79 and edged teammate Griffith, who was 15 seconds back in 16th place in 18:03.58. Reggie Gorden finished 25th in 18:39.31, Charlie Gordon was 35th in 19:14.11 and John Bartkowsky finished 36th in 19:17.65.
“Big home race. Gotta do good,” Sobczynski said, noting this was the best time he’s posted all season.
Eveleth-Gilbert won the boys race with 34 points. Grand Rapids was second at 60, Virginia third at 73, Mesabi East fourth at 85 and International Falls fifth at 108. Finishing behind the Broncos were Lake of the Woods (177) and Dryden (202).
Individually, Eveleth-Gilbert’s Derek Kunnari won the meet in runaway fashion. His 17:03.51 easily took care of runner-up Drew Johnson of Mesabi East, who posted a time of 17:21.54.
