Broncos play Proctor in second round

The breaking-ball pitching of Falls right-hander Ames Bryant limited Greenway to five hits as the Broncos won their opening Section 7AA tournament game at home Wednesday, 7-2.

“He’s got a good breaking ball and he showed it again (Wednesday),” said Falls head coach Vic Heinlen. “That’s imperative for him to be effective as he gets that across (the plate).”

A couple of early fielding errors contributed to the Broncos falling behind by a run before they scored twice in the opening inning to lead 2-1.

Falls took some base-running risks that backfired into outs, but was able to extend the lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning.

Dominic Casareto opened the frame with a double and scored with Gunner Anderson crossing the plate right behind him after a single by Andy Jespersen.

The Broncos were then able to put runners on second and third with still no one out with the help of a balk called against Greenway starting pitcher Alan Estey. But Falls couldn’t bring anyone else in to score that inning.

“We hit the ball solid and we made a couple of base-running mistakes — we tend to be over aggressive, and sometimes we get caught,” Heinlen said.

The inning ended on a double play when Michael Misner grounded out and Jespersen was called out at the plate as he attempted to score and collided with Greenway catcher Brazil Zuehlke.

The Broncos added three more runs in the fifth. Estey, who recorded the pitching loss, started the inning by hitting both Anderson and Bryant with pitches and then was relieved for the rest of the game by Darrick Finke.

Of Falls’ six hits, Casareto and Jespersen had two each.

The win advanced the Broncos, who were seeded No. 4 in their subsection, into the second round of the Section 7AA tournament to play on the home field of the top-seeded team in the other subsection, Proctor.
