John Cowman in 400 freestyle relay

The Broncos’ John Cowman swims the final leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay in Thursday’s home dual meet against Mesabi East.

The International Falls boys swimming and diving team competed in its first dual meet of the season Thursday when the Broncos hosted Mesabi East and lost, 90-65.

“We're still trying to feel out some events and what are the appropriate events for each of (the Broncos), so that they're consistent now throughout the season and getting practice in the same event,” said Falls coach Hailey Silvers.

The Giants, who fielded a much larger team in numbers than the Broncos, cruised to victory winning all the contested events with more than one entry and didn't score any points in the last two events, the 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay, which they swam for exhibition purposes only.

Among the contested events, the Falls picked up individual runner-up finishes from Jared Hunter in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 45.13 seconds) and 100 freestyle (1:04.15) and Alex Belanger in the 50 freestyle (28.02) and 100 butterfly (1:12.39).

In the two contested relays, Hunter, Belanger, John Cowman and Cole Tatsak placed second in the 200 medley relay (2:06.42) and Belanger, Hunter, Tatsak and Joey Griffith finished runner-up in the 200 freestyle relay (1:54.94).

The Broncos return to action Saturday in an invitational at Virginia.
