Proctor suffocates Broncos offense

Proctor entered Friday’s contest at Sports Stadium with only seven points in two games.

The Rails’ defense had also surrendered only 14 points over that same span, and that defense proved to be decisive in a 14-6 win over International Falls.

“Their defense was stout,” Broncos head coach Jay Boyle said. “We had a problem running the ball against them.”

The Broncos (1-2) rushed 35 times for only 75 yards (2.1 average), while the Proctor offense piled up 207 rushing yards on 47 attempts. Josh Lindberg scored from 18 yards out with 1:42 to play to give Proctor the insurance down the stretch.

International Falls also turned the ball over three times, including once in the first quarter at the Rails’ 9 yard line.

Gunnar Anderson had an efficient night through the air, finishing 11 of 19 for 142 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Zawchenuk in the second quarter. However, Anderson also threw an interception.

Zawchenuk led the Broncos rushing attack with 33 yards on six carries. Alex Bruess had a hard-fought 32 yards on 14 carries.

Lindberg led all rushers with a game-high 85 yards on 13 carries, while Tyler Haedrich rushed 11 times for 83 yards for the Rails (2-1).

Game notes

• Ryan Kilbride led the Bronco defense in points for the first time this season with 31. Ethan Johns was second with 22 and Beau Herzig third with 18 1/2. Johns leads the team through three games with 81 1/2 points.

• Good news came Tuesday from Brandon Richards on the injury front. The senior captain, who missed Friday’s loss with a knee injury, will also miss this week’s game at Cloquet, but there’s a good chance he’ll be back for the Homecoming game Oct. 1 against Hermantown. Richards has a sprained MCL and his ACL is a little swollen, he said. Richards was hurt Sept. 10 at Virginia.
