International Falls senior golfer Brett Musich carded a 70 for 18 holes Wednesday to take a 5-stroke lead after day one in the Section 7AA meet held at the Quarry at Giants Ridge.

“That’s a good round at the Quarry,” said Broncos head coach Bill Mason.

Going into the final two holes, Mason noted Musich was four-under-par before finishing up with a pair of bogeys to end at two-under.

Hermantown senior Taylor Sundbom, last year’s Section 7AA individual champion, ended day one in second place at 75.

The Broncos also advanced their entire team to day two after placing third in the team standings at 330, 11 stokes behind Virginia at 319. Hermantown was only 2 strokes behind at 321, while Hibbing ended up as the fourth and final team to advance to the second day of play with a score of 332.

The three other Falls golfers whose scores counted toward the team total on day one included: sophomore Brady Walls, 18th at 85; junior Zach Manka, 22nd at 86; and Wes Gunnerson, 27th at 89.

Given the 11-stroke team deficit after day one, Mason said three other Bronco golfers besides Musich would have to score an 84 or lower on day two to “put a scare in Virginia.”

The team with the overall lowest score on day two, which was scheduled for Friday, and the top-five individuals not on the winning team all advance to the Class AA State Boys Golf Tournament on June 12-13 at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

Today’s edition of The Journal went to print before day two of the Section 7AA meet was set to begin.
