The high school careers concluded Wednesday for two senior golfers from International Falls on the second and final day of competition in the Class AA Girls and Boys State Golf Tournament held at The Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.
In the girls competition, the Broncos’ Malinda Porter tied for 31st place with a 36-hole total of 175. Her score was 35 strokes behind this year’s individual champion, Detroit Lakes eighth-grader Kate Smith, at 140.
Porter followed up her opening day-round of 84 for 18 holes on Tuesday with a 91 Wednesday. She carded a 42 on the back nine on both days, but added 7 strokes to her front-nine score on the second day after having opened with a 42.
Of all the girls golfers who qualified for state out of Section 7AA, Porter ended up with the best score, finishing a stroke ahead of the Section champion and runner-up from Hermantown, seniors Olivia Tusa and Callie Wilson.
“(Porter) ended her year on a real high note,” said Broncos golf coach Bill Mason.
This was the second consecutive year for Porter to have competed at the State Class AA Tournament. She improved upon her place and score from a year earlier after having tied for 57th with a 191 in 2011.
Porter is one of three graduation losses for the Falls girls along with Kelly Blair, who qualified for state last year and then lost a playoff to Porter for a chance to return in 2012, and Alyssa Bergstrom.
In the state team competition, which involved the top teams in each of the eight Sections, Detroit Lakes won with the low score of 619, 35 strokes ahead of runner-up Minnewaska.
Hermantown, which won the Section 7AA Tournament team title, placed seventh at state with a score of 780.
Musich places 62nd
Broncos senior Brett Musich finished the Class AA Boys State Golf Tournament tied for 62nd place with a 36-hole total of 164. His score was 22 strokes behind the individual champion, Hermantown senior Taylor Sundbom, at 142.
Musich carded an 84 (41-43) for the first 18 holes Tuesday, before closing out the tournament Wednesday with an 80 (39-41).
“His game was just a little bit off,” Mason said.
This was also the second state meet for Musich, who had tied for 17th in 2010 when the tournament had been shortened to a day because of the stormy weather on day two.
Musich, who was named All-State for three years in a row, will continue to play golf next year in the collegiate ranks, where he has been recruited to play at Bemidji State University, a Division II school.
Detroit Lakes also won this year’s Class AA boys state team competition with the low score of 601, a stroke ahead of runner-up Hermantown, the Section 7AA champion.
