Local skaters competed this winter at the Northland Competition in Duluth and at the Red River Valley Figure Skating Classic in Moorhead. Skaters competed in different levels and different categories throughout the competition.
In the artistic category, skaters are judged on the ability to interpret music centered on a theme or character.
In the freeskate, skaters are judged on their mastery of elements at each level and overall skating ability.
In the compulsory skating, skaters are given 4-6 skating elements within the level they are in. They perform on a half sheet of ice and are judged on how well the elements are executed.
For the jumps, skaters are given 4-6 jump elements to be executed and judged on how well they are executed.
The moves-in-the-field skating involves skaters being given footwork elements and judged on those elements.
