The clean-up process has begun with the renovation work to deepen the Falls High School swimming pool, Superintendent Jeff Peura said Thursday.
He said the cleaning up should be done by the end of next week, after which the pool will be prepared to reopen in the beginning of next month.
Peura said unreserved general funds are being used to pay for the pool deepening project, which has been budgeted at $198,000.
The FHS swimming pool was only 3 1/2 feet deep before the renovation work began, with the bottom dug out following the end of the boys swimming and diving season.
The pool project is taking place because of a rule implemented in 2011-12 by the National Federation of State High School Associations, which now requires a minimum depth of 4 feet to use starting blocks.
Falls’ girls team hosted just two varsity meets and the boys team hosted only one this past season when all the teams involved had to agree to start all the events in the water, without starting blocks, to hold a meet in the FHS swimming pool.
With the side of the pool near the starting blocks now dug out to 5 feet, Peura said the Falls will once again be able to use starting blocks in the meets it hosts.
