L-BF spikers sweep Ely, improve to 6-0

 

Littlefork-Big Falls’ volleyball team improved to 6-0 Tuesday night after winning a road match in three straight games at Ely, 25-18, 25-22, 25-12.

Vikings head coach Sarah Bradley said L-BF “started off a little slow” and had to come from behind to win the first two games, before playing like the team should in the final game.

Statistical leaders for the Vikings included: Abby Thompson, four aces, 11 kills, three blocks; Brooke Millerbernd, four aces, seven kills, Courtney Pfeifer, seven kills, 14 digs.

L-BF returns to action Thursday with a road match against Chisholm.

 

RRCC spikers go 1-3 at Itasca Tournament

 

Rainy River Community College’s volleyball team won one of four matches in Saturday’s Itasca Tournament at Grand Rapids.

The Voyageurs swept Vermilion in two games, 25-12, 25-19, while being swept by Northland, 13-25, 16-25, and losing in three games to St. Cloud, 25-18, 18-25, 16-14, and Gogebic, 25-23, 21-25, 9-15.

On Friday, RRCC lost a Minnesota College Athletic Conference match in Grand Rapids to Itasca in three straight games, 25-27, 13-25, 13-25.

Voyageurs setter Nakita Estling recorded her 1,000th career set assist over the weekend. Estling, a sophomore from Warroad, had 798 set assists in 2011 and so far this year has recorded 207 after 35 games for a total of 1,005.

The Voyageurs, 0-2 in the MCAC and 3-10 overall, next play Friday in Cloquet against conference foe Fond du Lac.

 

Falls girls swimmers lose dual at Chisholm

 

What was supposed to be a home dual meet for the International Falls girls swimming and diving team before the swimming pool tile problem surfaced ended up being a loss Tuesday at Chisholm, 53-41.

All of Falls’ first-places finishes came in the individual events as the best the Broncos could do in the three relays was second place.

A pair of Falls swimmers both finished first in two events.

Junior Breanna Shofner won the 60- and 100-yard freestyle in 34.21 seconds and 1:01.47, respectively, while senior Sarah Todd placed first in 100 butterfly (1:15.14) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.96).

The Broncos’ only individual runner-up finish came from freshman Abby Kostiuk in the 100 backstroke (1:12.17).

The Broncos’ next meet is Thursday at Northeast Range.
