Broncos junior duo named to honorable mention team
Sydney Gordon has a teammate joining her this year on the 2010 Associated Press All-State Girls Hockey honorable mention team.
Junior Mackenzie Raboin joins her fellow junior standout on an All-State team that boasts only five players from Section 7A.
“Feels good,” Raboin said. “Nice to be honored like that.”
Her coach sounded even more excited.
“I think it’s well-deserved,” Broncos head coach Gerald Bolstad said. “It’s good for them. They both work hard and I’m glad they got recognized.”
Gordon, who was named to the honorable mention team last year just a month after getting diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, finished first on the Broncos in scoring with 36 points. She had a team-high 19 goals to go with a team-high 17 assists. Gordon had 42 points last season, but she felt much better on the ice this season with better medication.
“I was up and down, but it was better,” she said.
Raboin and Gordon and the rest of the Broncos had to be better this year with a new coach in Bolstad and only one senior in Nadine Mayer. Everyone stepped up, according to both juniors, and the end result was the second-best season in 11 years of the program, finishing at 12-12-3.
“I think we all figured we needed to step up for Nadine and our new coach,” Gordon said.
Raboin was second behind Gordon with 16 goals and her seven assists put her third on the Broncos with 23 points. However, there wasn’t a bigger goal-scorer on this year’s team.
Raboin’s game-winning tally in overtime at Hibbing-Chisholm on Dec. 15 was the goal of the year for the Broncos and it gave International Falls its first win over the Bluejackets in a span of 15 games over 11 years.
“We all just worked hard together and encouraged each other and things seemed to work out,” Raboin said.
And what about next year?
We got a pretty good team. Everyone’s coming back,” Gordon said. “Hopefully we give everyone a run for their money.”
Raboin took it a step further.
“We want to make it to state next year,” she said. “That’s our big goal.”
