Falls loses home opener to Giants

International Falls’ girls softball team fell behind by 4 runs in the opening inning Thursday, but waged a comeback before falling a run short and losing the home opener to Mesabi East, 6-5.

“I thought Morgan (Bruess) kind of collected herself and the pitching got a little stronger for us,” said Falls head coach Kevin Gordon. “We made some bad defensive plays (Thursday), but we made some really good (ones).”

Bruess, who gave up 5 hits pitching for the Broncos, had a pair of hits of her own at the plate, including a 2-RBI double that cut Mesabi East’s lead to 4-3.

Falls trailed by a run going into the top of the sixth when miscues of defense contributed to the Giants being able to score two more runs.

“All in all, I thought our kids came back in that segment and played well and kind of got back in the game,” Gordon said. “Then we had two mental mistakes in the end there and gave up two runs.”

The Broncos pulled back within a run in the bottom of the seventh powered by a 2-RBI double from Sam Hams, but weren’t able score anymore.

“Our kids didn’t feel bad about losing the game — they knew how they lost the game,” Gordon said. “We wanted to hit the ball, that’s a good thing, run the bases decently, that’s a good thing.

“Errors were the difference for us (Thursday) and I think the kids realize that. We weren’t as sharp as we needed to be, and we need to get better at that.”

The Broncos, who are now 1-1 on the season, next play at Lake of the Woods on Monday before hosting Hibbing on Tuesday.
