Wednesday afternoon’s softball game at Troy Janzen Field could be one for the record books when Littlefork-Big Falls’ reserve players had a hand in the Vikings’ 36-4 victory over Northeast Range in five innings.

When asked whether L-BF may have set a record for the most runs the team has ever scored in a five-inning game, Vikings head coach Mike Imhof said, “I think it is.”

“We hit the ball and they didn’t field,” he said. “We played well.”

In L-BF’s four innings at bat, the Vikings scored 15 runs in the first, none in the second, seven in the third and 14 in the fourth.

Mostly reserves were in the lineup for L-BF when a couple of batters went to the plate for the third time in the 14-run fourth inning.

Junior Kristy Horne Dunn picked up the pitching victory after working three scoreless innings to start the game. Sophomore Brooke Millerbernd, who has played at third base this season, pitched the final two innings and gave up all 4 runs in the fifth.

“Next year Kristy and Courtney (Pfeifer) are both back, and Brooke will still fill in, but in two years Brooke will be the main pitcher,” Imhof said. “She’s got big shoes to fill.”

Game at Ely canceled because of smoke from wildfire

What was supposed to be the Vikings’ regular-season finale ended up being canceled Thursday.

Imhof said L-BF had a 4-0 lead while batting in the top of the first when the smoke from a wildfire near Ely resulted in the area being evacuated and the game called off.

Consequently, L-BF will enter the playoffs with a 16-1 record for the regular season.

Imhof said the Vikings have wrapped up the No. 1 seed in their Sub-Section and will begin the Section 7A tournament at home next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. with their opponent to be determined.

The Journal will post the tournament pairings on its website after they are released this weekend.
