In the matchup for first place in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference’s Northern Division, Rainy River Community College’s softball team couldn’t score a run in either of Tuesday’s home games against Itasca.

“(Itasca’s) pitching is so strong,” said RRCC head coach Dieter Humbert.

The Voyageurs tallied only 2 singles when they lost game one, 8-0.

Cateline Fafard took the loss pitching 4 2/3 innings, giving up 6 earned runs on 12 hits with a walk and 2 strikeouts

Kristen Cruickshank finished the final 1 1/3 innings in relief, allowing 2 earned runs with a walk and a strikeout.

Itasca 8, RRCC 0

The second game ended up with the same score as the Voyageurs had only 3 singles and also lost, 8-0.

Colby Redhead recorded the pitching loss for RRCC in five innings of work, giving up 6 runs, four earned, on 4 hits with 4 walks while striking out three.

Cruickshank gave up 2 unearned runs with a walk.

Itasca improved to 19-1 in MCAC games and wrapped up first place in the Northern Division. The Voyageurs, whose MCAC record dropped to 14-4, play their final conference games Thursday with a doubleheader against Mesabi Range.
