International Falls’ boys track and field team found cold, damp weather in Virginia on Tuesday when it placed fifth among a dozen teams competing in the Golden Bear Invite.
Eveleth-Gilbert won with 147.5 points, followed by Virginia (110.5), Silver Bay (81), Mesabi East (77) and the Falls (75.5) rounding out the top five.
The Broncos tallied 23 of their points in the pole vault as Kyle Askey won the event after clearing 11 feet. Cade MacKay placed second at 10-6 and Jakob Ettestad cleared 9-6 for fourth.
“For (the) pole vault it was a cold day with a cross wind,” Askey said. “It was hard to maintain a constant speed and make a good plant with the cross wind.
“I personally think I could have done much better if I get a heavier pole and find out where my standards should be. ... Overall, I am proud that I made first place and cleared 11 feet, but I do need a lot more practice.”
Falls also recorded another individual first place with Paul Skoglund winning the 110-meter hurdles in 17.7 seconds.
Skoglund said he had tough competition in the hurdles with Eveleth-Gilbert’s Zach Wood.
“It is always fun to have a close race so you can spot your flaws and correct them,” Skoglund said. “I am very much looking forward to what we will be able to do in these next coming meets.”
Falls junior Nick Janttie placed third in the shot put (43-6 and tied for sixth in the 100 dash (12.5).
“I finished third (in the shot put) with a personal best of 43-6,” Janttie said. “I hope to get up into the 45-foot range before Sections.”
Two other Bronco juniors scored team points in two individual events.
Jason Pumper placed fourth in the high jump (5-6) and fifth in the triple jump (34-6), while Marco Griffith came in fourth in the 800 run (2:19.81) and eighth in the 100 dash (12.6).
“We started out (Tuesday) with some bad attitudes due to the weather, but quickly changed that after the competition started...,” Griffith said. “With a key runner or two missing and the bad weather, we performed very well.”
The Broncos were without one of their top sprinters, senior Tyler House, who had placed in four events at Friday’s meet in Baudette.
The best showing by the Falls in the four relay events came in the 4X100 with Janttie, Ettestad, Griffith and Cody Hallin placing second in 48 seconds.
Ettestad, Skoglund, Griffith and Janttie combined for a fourth-place finish in the 4X200 relay (1:42.5).
Skoglund, Ettestad, Pumper and Jake Piekarski placed fifth in the 4X400 relay (3:56.8).
MacKay, Eric Mathews, Corin Wenger and Logan Veillieux came in seventh in the 4X800 relay (9:50.37).
