Jensen, Myles and Hendrickson set and tie meet records

Four days after participating in the Hamline Elite Meet, Broncos junior Jake Jensen crushed the pole vault record Tuesday at the Falls Invitational at Falls High School.

In a meet that usually features cold, blustery or bitter weather — or a combination of the three — Jensen and fellow Broncos Tim Myles and Alicia Hendrickson took advantage of great conditions to tie or break three meet records.

Jensen’s 13 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault thumped the previous mark of 12-6, accomplished by two Broncos — Rhegy Gelo (2006) and Luke Zika (2000), who was nearby helping judge and score the triple jump.

Myles cleared 6-0 in the high jump to tie two athletes from Hibbing (full names unknown), while Hendrickson cleared 9-0 in the pole vault to tie Angela Baird of Grand Rapids (2000) and Leah Schleppegrell of Hibbing (2003).

Hendrickson led the Bronco girls team to a first-place finish with 194.5 points. Virginia finished runner-up with 160 points, followed by Eveleth-Gilbert (65), Lake of the Woods (48.5), Bigfork (38) and Mountain Iron-Buhl (28).

The Bronco boys finished second with 137 points, losing to meet champion Eveleth-Gilbert, which finished with 144 points. Virginia was third (124), Lake of the Woods fourth (67), Bigfork fifth (30) and Mountain Iron-Buhl sixth (22).

Jensen participated Friday in the 2010 Hamline Elite Meet at Klas Stadium (the location of this year’s state championships), and he continues to make his mark in the pole vault. The Elite Meet is for the top athletes and relays in the state, and Jensen qualified by clearing 13-6 at the Hibbing Early Bird Invitational. Jensen finished 12th out of 13 Friday by clearing 13-0. Myles and Shawn Filipiak qualified in the high jump for the same meet, but both declined to participate in a basketball tournament.

Myles (6-0) and Filipiak (5-10) finished 1-2 in the high jump Tuesday to grab 18 points for the Broncos. Ben Shofner finished fourth in the same event and earned four points to give the high jump bragging rights as the highest scoring event for the boys team with 22 points.

Also earning first- or second-place finishes for the boys were Jensen in the 100-meter dash (2nd, 12.21 seconds), Myles Wolden in the 300 hurdles (2nd, 53.77) and Brandon Richards in the shot put (2nd, 43-10).

The Bronco boys also finished well in relays. Tyler House, Reggie Gorden, Marco Griffith and Myles finished first in the 4x200 (1:39.99), while House, Nick Janttie, Beau Herzig and Myles finished first in the 4x100 (49.6). Finishing runner-up were Griffith, Gorden, Wolden and Aaron Marx in the 4x800 (10:16.94) and 4x400 (3:52.88).

While Alicia Hendrickson was highlighting the field events for the Bronco girls, Breanna Shofner, Grace Thorstad, Bailey Swanson and Therese Youso were burning up the track.

Shofner (14.52), Thorstad (14.74) and Swanson (15.08) finished 1-2-3 in the 100, while Youso dominated the hurdles with top finishes in the 100 (20.72) and 300 (57.99). Youso was the only athlete to finish under 1 minute in the 300.

Ashley Hasbargen added a top finish in the high jump (4-4), Thorstad and Alicia Hendrickson tied for first at 14-0.5 in the long jump and Alicia also grabbed first in the triple jump (28-11). Britni Hendrickson finished second in the discus (82-06) and Amber Harms was runner-up in the 3,200 (13:23.18).

Two relays finished first — 4x200 and 4x100 — and two finished second — 4x800 and 4x400. Individual participants in each relay weren’t reported.

The Falls Invitational began in 1997.
