Cade MacKay

The Broncos’ Cade MacKay clears the pole vault bar during Thursday’s Dick Ostroot Meet at the Falls High School track. MacKay placed second after clearing 11 feet.

The former longtime coach for whom Thursday’s meet is named after had the starting gun in hand when International Falls’ boys and girls track and field teams hosted and won the Dick Ostroot Meet.

In the three-team boys competition, the Falls placed first with 85 points, followed by Eveleth-Gilbert (62.5) and Bigfork (37.5).

A number of Bronco boys finished first individually and/or scored points in multiple events.

Jason Pumper won both the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) and the 200-meter dash (24.91) and placed third in the triple jump (38-1.25).

Tyler House won the 100 (11.95) and placed second in the triple jump (38-6.5).

Paul Skoglund won the 110 hurdles (17.28).

The Falls went 1-2-3 in the pole vault won by Kyle Askey (12-0), followed by Cade MacKay (11-0) and Jakob Ettestad (10-0).

Ettestad also finished third in the 200 (25.94), while MacKay added a third-place finish in the 800 (2:26.52).

Nick Janttie finished runner-up to House in the 100 (12.33) and also placed second in the shot put (42-1.5).

Logan Veillieux and Corin Wenger went 2-3 in the 3200 in 12:13.15 and 13:17.91, respectively.

Other runner-up finishers for the Falls included:

• Cody Tatsak, 110 hurdles, 21.7.

• Jake Piekarski, 400 dash, 58.37.

• Marco Griffith, 800 run, 2:23.

In the four relay events, the Broncos placed first in the 4X100 (47.7), 4X400 (3:57.27) and 4X800 (9:58.53) and second in the 4X200 (1:40.91).

Most Falls girls not in meet

Falls won the two-team girls competition over Bigfork, 82-50.

Being that the Bronco girls also had a meet the following day at Hibbing, head coach Jen Erickson said most of the girls took Thursday’s meet off so that they could have “fresh legs” for Friday.

Nonetheless, Falls’ girls placed first in seven of the 14 individual events.

Jessie Foreman won both the 100 hurdles (18.97) and 300 hurdles (1:00).

Paige Wold won the 400 dash (1:15.75) and also topped a 1-2-3 team finish in the long jump (12-9.5).

Lexi Erickson, who typically runs in distance races, led a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault (6-1).

The Broncos’ other first-place finishers included Emily Saari in the 800 run (3:19.81) and Kelsey Eibler in the triple jump (27-10.25).

Falls won three of the four relay event, placing second to Bigfork in only the 4X100.
