Amber Harms

The Broncos’ Amber Harms competes in the 1600-meter run during Tuesday’s Lake of the Woods Border State Bank Meet. Harms came in fourth place in 6 minutes, 10.36 seconds.

While other local sporting events had been called off Tuesday because of the weather, International Falls’ boys and girls track and field teams were able to compete at Baudette in the Lake of the Woods Border State Bank Meet.

The Bronco girls won the five-team competition with 153.5 points, followed by Warroad (93), West Marshall (91.5), Lake of the Woods (29) and Grygla-Gatzke (2).

Falls girls head coach Jen Erickson said the Broncos didn’t let the temperature cooling off about halfway through the meet slow them down.

“This was a smaller meet, but with Warroad there, the girls couldn’t take it easy,” Erickson said. “Warroad is a tough team to beat.

“A small meet like this early in the season gives us the chance to put every athlete in four events. We had 13 girls running the 100-meter dash. We are still trying to find the best fit as far as events go for each athlete while trying to put our fastest four girls in the relays.”

Falls won three of the four relay events, placing first in the 4X100 (56.37 seconds), 4X200 (2:01.27) and 4X400 (4:36.26) and runner-up in the 4X800 (10:57.3).

In the 14 individual events, the Broncos had five first-place finishes.

Sophomore Lexi Owen won both the 100 hurdles (17.8) and 300 hurdles (52.3) and finished third in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches).

Sophomore Hailey Fentem had the highest high jump (4-10) and added a pair of third-place finishes in the long jump (12-9.5) and 300 hurdles (55.33).

Freshman Savanah Olson placed first in the shot put (35-6.75) and third in the discus (91-7).

Sophomore Amy Auran won the pole vault (8-6).

Falls also recorded several other second-place finishes, including seventh-grader Lexi Erickson finishing runner-up in both the 1600 run (5:46.34) and 3200 (13:19.3) and sophomore sprinter Breanna Shofner placing second in both the 100 dash (13.37) and 200 (27.2).

Sophomore Jaci Scholler placed second in the triple jump (30-4) and third in the 100 dash (13.62).

Other third-place finishes came from Claire Herzig in the pole vault (6-6) and Madison Filipiak in the triple jump (27-11.25).

Bronco boys third

Warroad won the boys competition with 122 points, followed by West Marshall (92), the Falls (91), Grygla-Gatzke (34) and Lake of the Woods (32).

Two Bronco boys recorded both a first- and second-place individual finish.

Senior captain Tyler House tied for first in the 100 dash (11.22) and placed second in the triple jump (36-4.25).

Junior Marco Griffith won the 400 dash (55.97) and finished second in the 200 (25.3).

Falls’ other individual first-place finish came from Paul Skoglund in the 110 hurdles (17.45).

Other second-place finishes for the Falls included Nick Janttie in the shot put (39-7.5) and Austin Ruport in the discus (108-8).

The Broncos’ third-place individual finishes came from Logan Veillieux in the 3200 run (12:03.31) and Cade MacKay in the pole vault (10-6).

The best showings by Falls’ boys team in the relay events were second-place finishes in the 4X200 (1:45.97) and 4X400 (4:02.57).
