The Broncos’ Lexi Erickson (3) and Amber Harms (2) run next to a competitor from Grand Rapids in the 3200-meter run in Tuesday’s Iron Range Conference meet at the Falls High School track. Erickson placed fourth, while Harms came in fifth.

International Falls’ girls track and field team ended up second best Tuesday when the Broncos hosted the Iron Range Conference meet.

Grand Rapids won with 213 points, followed by the Falls (138.5), Mesabi East (88), Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin (83), Hibbing (71.5), Virginia (46), Eveleth-Gilbert (31) and Chisholm (11).

The Broncos received “All-Conference” honors in four individual events where they placed in the top two.

Freshman Savanah Olson ended up being All-Conference in two events after winning the discus (100 feet, 2.5 inches) and placing second in the shot put (35-10.5).

Sophomore Hailey Fentem won the long jump (16-3.25), placed third in both the high jump (4-8) and 100-meter hurdles (18.17 seconds) and finished sixth in the 300 hurdles (52.61).

Sophomore Amy Auran won the pole vault (8-0) and added a fourth-place finish in the 1600 run (5:50.15).

Among other Falls girls scoring team points:

• Seventh-grader Lexi Erickson was third in the 1600 run (5:49.5) and fourth in the 3200 (12:44.5).

• Sophomore Breanna Shofner placed third in the 200 dash (27.35) and fourth in the 100 (13.47).

• Freshman Maddie Filipiak was third in the 300 hurdles (51.6) and seventh in the triple jump (29-2).

• Sophomore Lexi Owen came in fourth in the 300 hurdles (51.61), sixth in the 100 hurdles (18.61) and eighth in the high jump (4-4).

Sophomore Jaci Scholler placed fourth in the triple jump (30-9.5) and seventh in the 200 (28.76).

• Sophomore Amber Harms finished fifth in the 3200 (12:49.26).

• Seventh-grader Valandre Butler came in sixth in the 100 (14.07) and eighth in the long jump (13-9).

• Eighth-grader Abby Kostiuk placed eighth in the 400 (1:06.51).

One of the Falls’ relay teams earned All-Conference recognition. Scholler, Butler, Owen and Shofner won the  4X100 relay in 53.99, 92-hundredth of a second ahead of runner-up Eveleth-Gilbert.

The 4x200 relay team of Kostiuk, Filipiak, Scholler and Madeline Dahle placed second in 1:55.22.

The 4X800 relay team of Auran, Harms, Lindsey Granrud and Rachel Foss finished fourth in 10:51.47, while Auran, Granrud and Kostiuk teamed up with Claire Herzig to place fifth in the 4X400 relay (4:39.7).

Bronco boys sixth

In the boys competition, the Broncos placed sixth out of the eight IRC teams.

Grand Rapids also had the top boys team with 157 points, followed by Hibbing (112), Virginia (110), Eveleth-Gilbert (83), Mesabi East (69), the Falls (63), Greenway/ Nashwauk-Keewatin (50) and Chisholm (33).

The only top-two individual finish by the Bronco boys came in the triple jump, where senior Tyler House placed second with a leap of 37-9. House added a fifth-place finish in the 100 dash (12.13).

Three of the team’s pole vaulters placed with senior Kyle Askey in third (11-0), junior Cade MacKay in sixth (10-6) and sophomore Jakob Ettestad in seventh (10-0).

Among the other Falls boys scoring team points in individual events:

• Junior Nick Janttie placed third in the shot put (43-4.5) and seventh in the long jump (17-3.5).

• Sophomore Paul Skoglund came in third in the 110 hurdles (18.04) and eighth in the 300 hurdles (48.66).

• Junior Jason Pumper was fourth in the triple jump (37-3.5).

• Junior Marco Griffith finished fifth in the 400 (55.57).

• Freshman Cody Tatsak placed eighth in the 110 hurdles (21.43).

The best the Bronco boys did in the four relay events was when House, Janttie, Griffith and Cody Hallin combined for a runner-up finish in the 4X100 (47.1).
