International Falls placed fourth among the 11 girls track and field teams competing Tuesday in Grand Rapids as part of the Section 7AA True Team meet.
“The girls had a great meet (Tuesday) and showed that when they pull together as team, they can stay right with the some of the bigger schools in our Section,” said Bronco girls head coach Jen Erickson. “I’m proud of the way the girls stayed focused on doing as well as possible in their events despite the constant rain showers they had to endure throughout the meet.
“If this had been a normal meet, it probably would have been canceled due to the weather conditions, but a True Team meet has to run on schedule — rain or shine.”
A True Team meet varies from a regular track meet in that all the athletes, regardless of what place they finish in, earn points for the team.
With 11 teams competing and each team having two entrants per individual event, first place is worth 22 points and last place is worth a point. Every person competing contributes to the team’s point total.
“There is more pressure on each girl because her teammates are counting on her to pull in as many points as possible for the team,” Erickson said.
Grand Rapids won the True Team meet with 623 points, followed by Hermantown (480.5), North Branch (478.5), the Falls (472.5) and Chisago Lakes Area (434.5) filling out the top five.
Sophomore sprinter Breanna Shofner tallied the most points for the Broncos with three top-10 individual finishes. She came in fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.69 seconds), fifth in the 400 (1:03.1) and sixth in the 100 (13.52) for 54 points.
Sophomore Hailey Fentem tied for third in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches), placed fifth in the long jump (15-1/2) and ninth in the 100 hurdles (17.8) for 50.5 points.
