A four-run first inning turned out to be enough scoring Tuesday when Littlefork-Big Falls’ softball team won its season opener at home over Deer River, 5-3.

“It was a good game,” said L-BF head coach Mike Imhof. “We didn’t hit the ball well, but that can be expected with the (cold) weather.”

The Vikings registered three of their six hits for the game in the first inning when Junior Claire Simon had the first of her two hits.

Deer River got a run back in the top of the second via a sacrifice and then plated the final two runs in the fourth.

L-BF’s final run came in the bottom of the fourth when senior Paige DeLack hit an infield ground out to bring Simon home.

Courtney Pfeifer pitched a complete game for L-BF as she allowed only 5 hits to record the win.

“Our defense was good, we had only one error and we played OK,” Imhof said. “Courtney pitched well.”

Kerrie Humble recorded the pitching loss for Deer River after giving up all 5 runs in five innings of work. She was relieved in the sixth inning by Maija Erzar.

The 1-0 Vikings return to action Thursday in a road game against Cherry.
