After allowing just one goal in last weekend’s series sweep at Michigan State, Ohio State men’s hockey senior goalie Brady Hjelle of International Falls has been named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Monday.
He picks up the award for the second-consecutive week and third time this season.
Hjelle allowed just one goal in two wins at Michigan State, stopping 53-of-54 shots for a .981 save percentage. He made back-to-back starts for the first time this year. Hjelle and the Buckeyes held the Spartans, who came into the weekend second in the CCHA on the power play, scoreless in six chances.
Friday, Hjelle had 31 saves in a 1-0 win, his third shutout of the year. Ohio State broke a scoreless tie with 2:13 left in regulation.
Saturday, Hjelle gave up a first-period goal but blanked the Spartans the rest of the way as Ohio State came from behind for a 3-1 win. He had 22 saves in the game.
On the year, Hjelle has a 1.23 goals-against average and .957 save percentage, ranking second in the NCAA and first in the CCHA in both categories. He is tied for third nationally with three shutouts.
Hjelle leads the CCHA with a .59 goals-against average and .978 save percentage in conference play, allowing four goals in six starts and seven games played. He has been the first star in all six of his league starts.
