In conjunction with Carleton College’s annual Honors Convocation, the Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation Department announced its annual senior awards, in which Jessa Youso of Virginia was a recipient of the Pat Lamb Award.
The Pat Lamb Award is given to outstanding senior female student-athletes who have achieved athletic excellence at the varsity level and a high level of academic achievement.
Youso, a Psychology major with a 3.4 grade-point average, was a three-sport athlete during each of her four years at Carleton, participating in volleyball, basketball and outdoor track and field.
Her collegiate athletic career concluded earlier this month at the MIAC Track and Field Championships, where she qualified for the finals of the javelin.
On the basketball court, she appeared in 91 games over her four seasons, making 27 starts and averaging 4.4 points per contest.
However, Youso will be best remembered at Carleton for her volleyball career. A two-time All-MIAC selection, she received All-Region Honorable Mention in 2012, the first Knight selected for all-region recognition by the AVCA in five years.
This past season, Youso ranked second in the conference as she posted the second-highest single-season attack percentage (.352) in Carleton history. She was one of only three MIAC players to rank in the top-10 for both kills and blocks during conference matches, ranking fourth in the MIAC with an average of 3.20 kills/set and fifth with 1.00 blocks/set.
As a senior captain, she helped lead the Knights to the semifinals of the 2012 MIAC playoffs, where she recorded 20 kills in a five-set match versus eventual NCAA Division III national champion University of St. Thomas.
Youso’s name appears in Carleton College’s record book a number of times. In addition to her senior season attack percentage, she also ranks third in career attack percentage (.312) and block assists (246), eighth with 869 career kills and 10th in single-season kills (323).
She has also come up to International Falls and assisted Mel Millerbernd at Rainy River Community College during summer camps for volleyball and basketball.
Youso is the daughter of Jody and Shawn Youso in Virginia and the granddaughter of John and Pam Wenberg and Frank and Evelyn Youso in International Falls.
