The Superior International Junior Hockey League victories continued for Fort Frances on Saturday.

The Lakers’ winning streak reached 10 when they picked up a 5-2 home victory over the Dryden Ice Dogs.

Dryden’s Derek McPhail opened the scoring 17:43 into the contest with the only goal of the opening period when he put the puck past Fort Frances goalie Jameson Shortreed.

It was all Lakers in the second period, however, as they found the back of the net three times on Ice Dogs goalie Eric Szymczyk.

Scoring for the home team were Jon Carlson, Patrick Sofer and Jacob Nolan.

Falls High School graduate Alex Bruess extended the Fort Frances lead to 4-1 early in the final period before Mike Butler countered for Dryden at the 8:49 mark.

The Lakers’ Davis Smith then capped off the scoring with the final goal of the evening at 13:37, when Szymczyk left the net and gave way to Robert Kopytek the rest of the way.

Shortreed made 25 saves to pick up the win and help the Lakers improve their overall record to 33-15-1-2.

Szymczyk faced 30 shots in a losing cause, while Kopytek turned aside all four attempts he faced in relief as Dryden dropped to 28-25-1-1 overall.

The two teams face each other again tonight at 7:30 in Dryden.

Pizza Hut player

of the week

The SIJHL announced Monday that Falls High School graduate Jordan Christianson of the Fort Frances Lakers has been named the Pizza Hut player of the week for the period concluding March 3.

In three outings this past week, the 20-year-old forward from the Falls registered seven points on a pair of goals and five assists helping the Lakers skate to a trio of victories.

On Feb. 26, Christianson scored once and had three assists in a 5-4 win over the Dryden Ice Dogs.

One night later, on the road, he scored another goal and set up one more in a 4-3 shootout victory over the league-leading Minnesota Wilderness.

The Lakers’ assistant captain then concluded his week adding another assist in the 5-2 victory over the Ice Dogs on Saturday.

On the season, Christianson sits third in SIJHL offensive production with 68 points on 22 goals and 46 assists.
