The local Mighty Mustangs youth wrestling club's season is now underway.
Earlier this month, the Mighty Mustangs scored 30 points to place third in a "Pick 10" team tournament behind Deer River (35) and Hibbing (32).
The Mighty Mustangs have also wrestled this year in Blackduck and Proctor. While some wrestlers compete at additional individual open tournaments, the coaches designate several PreK-8 tournaments that the team as a whole tries to attend.
The team participates in tournaments where points are calculated by the individual results of the wrestlers. In Nashwauk, the team had six wrestlers who placed first, five that took second, seven third and three fourth. Each wrestler competes in a four-man, round-robin bracket.
The Mighting Mustangs youth wrestling program was first formed in 2007. For 2014, longtime coaches Pete Benedix and Mike Holden are joined by two new coaches, a local youth pastor and former Division I wrestler, Nathan Nelson, and the 2005 Frazee Wrestler of the Year, Dan Schermerhorn.
Also coaching is ninth-grader Nick Hedtke, who is unable to competitively wrestle this year because the sport is presently not being offered at the high school level in International Falls, where resuming high school wrestling has been proposed.
The next scheduled tournament for the Mighty Mustangs will be this Saturday in Superior, Wis.
