Travis Shold

Shooter Travis Shold of International Falls flings the puck into the net past goalie Brett Oltmanns of Windom in Saturday’s Clinton Bahr Shootout at Kerry Park Arena. In the finals, however, Oltmanns stopped Shold to post the ninth overall win for the goalies in the shootout’s 12 years.

It took a shootout to dethrone Nagurski Oil as the Larry Ross Open Division champion at last weekend’s Kerry Park Men’s Hockey Tournament.

Meyers Sports snapped Nagurski Oil’s four-year string of championships with a 4-3 shootout victory Sunday to close out the 12th annual tournament.

In the 30-and-older Jim Thompson Division, the Good Hands Broncos defeated Rumors Up North, 4-1, in the title game.

The 40-and-over Dunn Sampson Division featured the Metro Mallards winning the championship game over The Spot/AmericInn, 7-2.

A shootout was needed to determine the 50-and-over Buck Riley Division champion with the Roseau Golden Agers defeating Frank’s Taxidermy, 3-2.

In all the divisions combined, 26 teams once again participated in the annual tournament, which was created to raise funds for capital improvement projects at Kerry Park Arena and the International Falls Recreation Hockey Program. Well over $100,000 has been raised since the tournament began.

While the final figures for 2012 weren’t available earlier this week, Tournament Committee member Scott Riley said he expects this year’s tournament will be able to “contribute a very healthy amount.”

“The tournament went very, very well,” said Riley.

In Saturday’s Clinton Bahr Shootout, goalie Brett Oltmanns of Windom stopped shooter Travis Shold of International Falls in the finals to post the ninth win for the goalies in the shootout’s 12-year history.

The shootout also included a stick salute for Jeff McBride, who participated in the Men’s Hockey Tournament as a goalie the past four years before passing away from a heart attack in January at the age of 24. McBride attended Bemidji State University, where a scholarship has been set up in his name.
