The course used last August for an informal triathlon originating from City Beach will be incorporated Aug. 18 for the Backus Triathlon.
Jackie Krueger, whose husband, Ken, along with some of his Karate North Taekwondo students and other friends participated in last year’s informal event, said it has been several years since an organized triathlon, the Bad-Mo-Gator, was held locally.
She said the Backus Triathlon, which is being promoted by the Backus Community Center, will have each of the three legs start and finish at City Beach with a quarter-mile swim at the beach, then biking 11 miles between City Beach and Tilson Creek and concluding with a 5-kilometer run.
Krueger said the entrants can be either individuals who will compete in all three legs or teams of two or three people participating in different legs.
With this being the inaugural Backus Triathlon, Krueger said there is no limit on the number of entrants that will be accepted.
“If we got 30 (entrants), we’d be thrilled,” she said.
The registration fee by Aug. 10 is $40 per person, $75 per two-person team and $100 per three-person team.
After August 10, the registration fee increases to $50 per person, $90 per two-person team and $120 per three-person team.
Krueger said this year’s Backus Triathlon is seeking to cover its costs with medals being awarded to all finishers.
Registration and waiver forms for the triathlon are available at the Backus office or online at www.backusab.org.
