The season came to an end late last week for the International Falls Junior League baseball team at the District 4 Tournament hosted by Greenway at Bovey Field.

Falls lost the opening game of the four-team, double-elimination tournament on Thursday to Greenway, 17-11.

Four Falls players recorded multiple hits. Chase Bernard went 3-5 with 3 RBI, Riley Nemec was 3-4 with 2 RBI, Walker Wegner hit 2-4 with 2 RBI and Tyler Coffield also went 2-4 with 2 RBI, 

Austin Anderson, Brenden Williams and Lane Skallman each added a hit.

Coffield started on the mound for the Falls and pitched three innings, allowing eight runs, four earned, on nine hits with three walks while striking out five.

Wegner pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, giving up five runs, two earned, on two hits with six walks while striking out four.

Bernard pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on a hit with three walks and a strikeout.

Falls had three errors.

 

Itasca 16, I. Falls 8

In the losers’ bracket game on Friday, the Falls was eliminated from the tournament with a 16-8 loss to Itasca.

Tate Promersberger led the Falls at the plate with two hits and a RBI. Remington Veillieux and Coffield each had a hit and a RBI. Skallman, Nemec and Wegner also had a hit apiece.

Walker Ulrich started on the mound and pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing 15 runs, 11 earned, on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Nemec pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, giving up an earned run on three hits with three strikeouts.

Falls had two errors.

“The team played well considering the loss of some key players to injury and other activities, along with the extreme heat,” said Falls Junior League assistant coach Tim Wegner. “They had chances to win in each game.”

Falls closed out the season with a 4-8 record overall.

This year’s coaching staff included head coach Mike Coffield and assistants Tim Wegner, Al Skallman and Shane Williams.
