International Falls’ VFW baseball team reached double digits for victories this summer after sweeping a road doubleheader Monday against Chisholm-Cherry.
In game one, which counted for tournament seeding, Falls left runners on base in the early innings and didn’t score until the top of the fifth before winning, 3-2.
Falls starting pitcher Luke Spilde gave up both runs on 6 hits with 2 walks while striking out eight working 4 1/3 innings. Wyatt Ulrich picked up the pitching victory going 2 2/3 innings in relief without giving up a run or a hit.
“Spilde and Ulrich pitched well in the first game,” said Falls VFW head coach Tim Mellstrom.
Of Falls’ 9 hits, Ulrich and Taylor DeLack each had two.
International Falls 7, Chisholm-Cherry 3
In game two, which went four innings, Falls broke a 3-3 tie with 4 runs in the top of the third to win, 7-3.
Falls starter Cole Miggins pitched the first two innings when he gave up all 3 runs on 2 hits with 3 walks while striking out three. Reliever Jack Mellstrom recorded the pitching victory working the final two innings with no runs on 2 hits while striking out four.
Falls’ season record improved to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in games that count toward tournament seeding at the end of the regular season. Falls’ next games will be on Thursday with a doubleheader at Grand Rapids starting at 2 p.m.
