Falls’ VFW baseball team improved to 12-2 last Thursday after sweeping a road doubleheader against Grand Rapids.
“The kids played pretty hard, they played well,” said Falls VFW head coach Tim Mellstrom. “Pitching was excellent.”
In game one, Falls led by 4 runs after three innings, but needed two extra frames to defeat Grand Rapids, 6-5.
Ben Humbert started on the mound for the Falls and worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing all 5 runs on 5 hits with 7 walks while striking out eight. Walker Ulrich recorded the victory pitching the final 3 2/3 innings in relief, giving up a hit with 2 strikeouts.
At the plate, Clay Bergstrom led the Falls with 3 hits, while Humbert added two more.
I. Falls 8, Grand Rapids 6
In game two, the Falls broke open a 3-3 tie with 5 runs in the top of the seventh and held on to win, 8-6.
Taylor DeLack pitched the first 4 1/3 innings for the Falls, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks while striking out two. Cole Miggins threw the next 2 1/3 innings in relief, giving up 4 runs on a hit with 3 walks. Jack Mellstrom faced a batter in the bottom of the seventh to record the final out.
Of Falls’ 9 hits, Humbert had three, while Miggins and Luke Spilde added two each.
The Falls returns to action this Thursday with a road doubleheader at Virginia beginning at 5 p.m.
