Bemidji State spring hockey caravan visits International Falls
Minnesota has five Division I hockey programs.
Bemidji State University was the last of the five to join the WCHA, and it opens its home schedule in the brand new Bemidji Regional Event Center (BREC) on Oct. 15 against the University of North Dakota.
The BREC is the reason BSU is in the WCHA.
“We wouldn’t be in the WCHA if not for the new building,” Beavers head men’s hockey coach Tom Serratore said Wednesday at The Spot on 53.
Serratore, Steve Sertich (BSU’s women’s hockey coach) and legendary Beaver men’s hockey coach Bob Peters were all at The Spot on Wednesday as part of a BSU spring hockey caravan, which is promoting the BREC. The caravan met and ate lunch with the local Rotary Club, plus some guests. The BREC will hold just under 4,500 fans for hockey games and as many as 6,000 for concerts.
Former Bronco and current Beaver Drew Fisher was also in attendance. The 2010-11 Beavers will have three players from the Borderland area — Ryan Cramer (FHS ’04), Fisher and Fort Frances native Dan MacIntyre.
“(International Falls) has been very good to Bemidji State, also,” Serratore said.
Peters, a native of Fort Frances, got a round of applause at the lunch when it was announced the BREC’s sheet of ice will be named the Robert H. Peters Rink. Peters won 702 games at BSU, along with 13 national championships.
The Bemidji City Council unanimously accepted a recommendation Monday to name it after Peters.
Other notable home games for the Beavers are Oct. 29-30 (UMD), Jan. 21-22 (SCSU) and March 4-5 (Minnesota).
