International Falls’ boys and girls cross country teams both placed runner-up Thursday at the Roseau Rams Invitational.
“We had some good individual performances (Thursday),” said Broncos head coach Paul Hjelle. “Many of our runners are reaching goals that they have set for themselves.
“We just need to keep getting better with every meet. So far that looks good.”
In the boys competition, the host school, Roseau, finished first with 33 points, followed by the Falls (45), Thief River Falls (142) and Warroad (171).
The Broncos had four runners with top-10 finishes for team points led by senior Marco Griffith, who placed fourth on the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 18 seconds.
“We had a great race (Thursday) and did a really good job staying in a pack, which is really good for our second meet,” Griffith said.
The three other Falls runners finishing in the top 10 included: Logan Veillieux, fifth in 18:22; Wyatt Ulrich, ninth in 18:52; and Cade MacKay, 10th in 18:57.
In the girls competition, the Broncos finished three points out of first place.
Warroad won with 44 points, followed by the Falls (47), Lake of the Woods (69) and Roseau (73).
Eighth-grader Lexi Erickson had the best finish on the 4,000-meter course for the Broncos by placing second in 15:16. Falls junior Sydney Raboin came in fifth in 15:49.
The three other Bronco girls runners who counted for team points included: Amber Harms, 11th in 16:51; Amy Auran, 13th in 16:58; and Rachel Foss, 16th in 17:45.
“I was really proud of all of the girls for sticking close to each other,” Foss said. “It was only the second meet, but we’ve already been improving.”
Falls’ junior high teams also competed Thursday at Roseau with the girls placing second and the boys coming in third on the 3,200-meter course.
The Broncos’ next meet is Monday at Warroad.
