DNR Wildlife Manager
Deer hunters in Koochiching and northwestern St. Louis counties need to look closely at the maps when applying for either sex deer permits.
The boundaries and permit area numbers in these areas have been changed.
Permit area 104 is now permit area 103. The southern and southwestern parts of the permit area have been modified.
Permit area 107 is now permit area 108. There were changes to the southeastern part of the permit area.
Permit area 115 is now permit areas 119 and 118. It was split along the Vermilion River, and part of it is now west of Highway 53 also.
Over time the Department of Natural Resources reviews permit area boundaries and makes changes as needed to better manage the deer herd. We try to define areas of similar habitats and deer densities and keep them in a permit area. Our goal is not to change these boundaries again for at least 10 years.
When we make these changes, we also review the number of either sex permits we can give out, and make adjustments as needed. We also change permit area numbers so that hunters are forced to look at the map. We want to make sure they apply in the right area.
If you have questions, please contact the area wildlife office at 286-5434 or write DNR Wildlife Office, 392 East Highway 11, International Falls, MN 56649; email to Frank.Swendsen@state.mn.us.
