More golfers sought to use course in 2012
High temperature records weren’t the only thing broken last month in the International Falls area. The unseasonably warm weather also made it possible for the Falls Country Club to open for the season the earliest it has even been available to golfers.
Falls Country Club PGA professional Tom O’Connell said this year’s March 23 opening date broke the previous earliest start of March 26 set two years ago.
Though last Thursday’s snowfall closed down the course late last week, O’Connell said it was able to reopen Sunday and is now in the “best shape it’s been in for spring.”
To get more people to use the course, particularly new or lapsed golfers, O’Connell said the Falls Country Club this year will be involved in all of PGA America’s “Play Golf America” programs.
For instance, in April for “Free Fitting and Trade-Up Month,” O’Connell said the Falls Country Club will have a “free fitting and demo day” on the driving range from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 21 when golfers will be able to be properly fit for clubs and hit the latest clubs from TaylorMade, PING and Callaway.
In addition, on April 21, O’Connell said the Falls Country Club will hold the first annual “golf club exchange day,” which he described as a “flea market for golfers” where they can show up that day on the deck area outside the clubhouse and be responsible for their own golf equipment to sell or buy at no charge for being there.
Each month, O’Connell said, “We’re going to do something big on a day to promote” the sport of golf.
He said May will be “Free Lesson Month,” June will feature “Women’s Golf Month” and July is “Family Golf Month.”
In the event “Play Golf America” is successful this year in attracting more golfers to the Falls Country Club, O’Connell said the course will continue the programs in future years.
