Shawn Filipiak, a 2011 International Falls High School graduate and a three-time state qualifier in the boys high jump, has confirmed he will be transferring to the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth to compete in track and field starting next season.
Filipiak, who also scored 1,063 career points as a member of the Bronco boys basketball team, played basketball in 2011-12 at Rainy River Community College, which doesn’t have a track and field program.
Upon enrolling at St. Scholastica in the fall, Filipiak said he also plans to try out for the Saints men’s basketball team, though he would need the OK from his track and field coach to be able to compete in both basketball and track and field.
Filipiak said he will be pursuing a degree in elementary education at St. Scholastica, where he will be able to transfer all but one of his courses from RRCC, and also has an interest in coaching. He has been a volunteer assistant this spring for FHS’s track and field program.
Incoming track and field recruits at St. Scholastica will not be officially announced until sometime this summer, said Saints Sports Information Director Jesse Robinson.
