Dylan McBride, former Falls resident and Bronco track team member, recently participated in the Special Olympics athletics competition at the section level in Cloquet and at the State Special Olympics meet at Stillwater.
At sections, McBride, a member of the Virginia Road Runners, placed first in the 100-meter dash, first in the 200 and third in the long jump. He was also part of the first-place 200-meter relay team.
At state, due to the strong finish at sections, McBride’s team was placed with the metro and suburb teams in the top division. After finishing fifth in the 100, he said he felt totally outdone by the speed of the other competitors. He next ran in the relay and his team finished eighth.
“The kids were just too fast,” McBride said.
After those results, McBride said he decided that in the next two events, the long jump and the 200, he was not going to worry about the other runners and simply run as fast and as hard as he could.
He finished with a third-place bronze medal in the long jump and a second-place silver medal in the 200, missing the gold by a tenth of a second and denying him a trip to nationals.
“I am proud of my ability to compete with so many great athletes who are going to Nationals and World Special Olympics,” said McBride.
