This year’s Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce Home Show will feature the return of the Fort Frances Strongman Competition as the main entertainment May 12 from 3-7 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre.

The competition is being organized by local strongman Luke Skaarup and Chamber of Commerce Manager Anthony Mason. It is being promoted as one of the biggest strongman competitions in Western Canada this year. Admission is $5 per adult with children under 6 admitted free.

The event will be refereed by former U.S. Pro Strongman Jeff Peterson from Minneapolis. Kateri Skaarup of Thunder Bay is the master of ceremonies.

The Fort Frances Strongman Competition is geared for sport enthusiasts and family audiences and will feature top-ranked athletes from Ontario, Western Canada and the United States. The competition includes feats of strength such as lifting a car, flipping a huge tire, pulling a truck, pressing heavy objects overhead and lifting large stones.

There will also be a Zumba demonstration by Energy Fitness and a women’s challenge event where women in the audience can compete for bragging rights in a 95-pound barbell press challenge for maximum repetitions.

There will be $4,000 in cash awarded with prizes and trophies going to the top-three strongmen and a plaque for the top female lifter.
