In the University of North Dakota’s 1,000th game in school history last Saturday, Ty Boyle (FHS ’06) recorded his first career interception and doubled his previous career-best with 10 tackles (three unassisted) in a 27-17 loss at No. 13 Montana.
Boyle has 25 tackles (13 solo, 12 assisted) in nine games — all starts — with three tackles for loss and one sack.
UND’s season closes today at 1 p.m. at South Dakota State. The Fighting Sioux are 3-7 overall and 0-4 in the Great West.
Boyle was also recently named to the 2010-11 CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District first team.
This is a repeat honor for the former Bronco. Last season, he joined three others — Andrew Miller, Brandon Hellevang, and Nick Nolte — on the first team.
An economics major working towards a master’s degree in applied economics, Boyle was named to the 2009 Great West All-Conference second team and was a 2008 GWC all-conference honorable mention. A three-year letterwinner and member of Phi Betta Kappa, he has received both Great West Conference and North Central Conference academic honors.
Boyle has started every game for the Fighting Sioux this season at nose guard.

• Neil Sheehy (FHS grad) has been recognized over the past couple months in two different national media outlets for being the all-time best No. 0 in the NHL.
From NHL.com:
“When Calgary sent Sheehy, a rugged defenseman, to Hartford during the 1987-88 season, he switched from the No. 5 he wore in Calgary to No. 0 for his 26 games with the Whalers. Sheehy went back to a more conventional No. 15 when he was dealt to Washington during the offseason.”
From SI.com:
“The story goes that when Sheehy’s family emigrated from Ireland, their name was O’Sheehy. Neil, who spent six seasons in the NHL (1984-91), figured it was the best way to get the O’ back.”
• Eight seasons ago Marc Franz (FHS ’87) took over a new football program at Rogers High School. Today, Franz and his Royals will play in the first state semifinals game in school history.
“It’s been a fun season,” Franz said Thursday. “We hope to extend the season.”
The Royals (11-0) take on Mahtomedi (10-2) at 12:45 p.m. in a Class 4A contest at the Metrodome. The winner will play for the championship Nov. 27 against the winner between St. Thomas Academy (11-0) and Totino-Grace (9-1).
Franz said a committed junior class from last year worked extra hard in the offseason and had a goal to make it one step further this year after the school’s first state tournament last season (they lost to eventual champion Totino-Grace in the quarterfinals).
“It’s been their goal to get back to the state tournament and improve on last year and they did that,” Franz said. “They’re really excited about playing in the Dome.”
Mahtomedi returns for its fourth consecutive and 11th overall state appearance. The Royals, ranked No. 3 in the final AP poll, have never played the Zephyrs, but have seen them in a preseason scrimmage for seven years in a row.
“We have a great team. I feel good about our team going in,” said Franz, who played under Stuart Nordquist at Falls High School. Nordquist plans to be at the Metrodome today to watch his former player, Franz said.
To view a Webcast of the game, it’s free at 45.GrandStadium.tv. Students will be coordinating the coverage of all 12 semifinal games, according to the Minnesota State High School League. All six Prep Bowl XXIX games will be broadcast live on KSTC-TV, Channel 45. The Prep Bowl games will also be simulcast live and free on 45.GrandStadium.tv.
